Houston County Arrest Records: Match the Jail Booking to the Correct Texas Court

Houston County is an East Texas county headquartered in Crockett. It is not the City of Houston and it is not Harris County. Searching the wrong jurisdiction can lead to unrelated inmates, police reports and court cases.

This guide explains the complete local path: search the Houston County Jail list, verify the correct person, identify the arresting agency, obtain the police report, route felonies and misdemeanors to the correct clerk, understand bond and release, and check whether the record may qualify for expunction or nondisclosure.

Do not confuse Houston County with Houston city or Harris County. Houston County records are centered in Crockett, Texas. A Houston Police Department or Harris County result normally concerns a completely different jurisdiction.

Choose the record that answers your actual question

HOUSTON COUNTY JAIL Is the person in custody?

Use the county inmate list for the current jail record. Search by name, booking number or inmate number and save every identifier connected with the result.

Best for: present custody, booking identity, charges, bond entries and inmate-service information.
ARRESTING AGENCY What allegedly happened?

Request the incident report, arrest report or probable-cause document from the Sheriff or city police department whose officer created it.

Best for: incident narrative, officer observations, agency case number and releasable investigative information.
COURT RECORD What happened to the charge?

Use the District Clerk for felonies, County Clerk for Class A/B misdemeanors and Class C appeals, or the appropriate Justice or municipal court.

Best for: filed charges, court dates, bond orders, dismissal, plea, judgment and sentence.
An arrest is not a conviction. A booking charge is an allegation received during intake. The prosecutor may file a different charge, decline prosecution or dismiss a case, and the court may enter another outcome.

Official jail lookup

How to search the Houston County Jail inmate list

The county’s current-inmate page provides a single search field with options for a name, booking number or inmate number.

Open the official Houston County inmate list Confirm that the page heading says Houston County Inmate List and that the county address shown is in Crockett.
Select the correct search type Choose Name, Booking Number or Inmate Number. A number is more precise than a name when it is available.
Begin with the last name Search broadly before adding the first name. This helps when the record uses a middle name, suffix, former surname or different spelling.
Try the legal and alternate names Test a maiden name, hyphenated surname, shortened first name, suffix or known alias.
Open every plausible result Do not assume the first matching name belongs to the correct person.
Compare the booking timeline Check the booking date, arrest date or other displayed event information against what you know.
Review every charge and bond entry One booking may involve multiple charges, warrants, bonds or holds.
Save the jail identifiers Record the booked name, booking number and inmate number exactly as displayed.
Identify the arresting agency The Houston County Jail can hold people arrested by the Sheriff, Crockett Police, other city agencies, constables, DPS or another authority.
Continue to the court record Search the court system to determine whether a case was filed and what happened after booking.

What the Houston County arrest fields mean

Jail and arrest identifiers explained
Field What it identifies What it does not prove Practical next step
Booked name The name entered during jail processing. It does not guarantee that two people with the same name are the same person. Compare date of birth, age, number and arrest date.
Booking number A particular jail intake or custody event. It does not show the final court outcome. Use it when calling the jail or requesting booking information.
Inmate number The person within the Houston County jail system. It does not explain every case or warrant attached to the person. Use it for mail and other approved inmate services.
Booking date When the person entered jail processing. It may not be the exact date of the alleged offense. Use it to distinguish separate arrests.
Arresting agency The department responsible for the arrest. It does not mean the Sheriff created the incident report. Request the report from the agency shown.
Charge description The alleged offense received during arrest or intake. It is not a finding of guilt and may later be amended. Compare it with the prosecutor’s filed charge.
Bond amount A bond entry associated with the listed charge. Paying one bond will resolve every case or hold. Confirm all charges, warrants and holds before paying.
No bond or hold A possible restriction preventing immediate release. The person can never receive release. Check the magistrate or court order and identify the agency controlling the hold.
Release information The end or anticipated end of the custody event. Release is not dismissal or acquittal. Search the criminal case for continuing obligations.
Mugshot or booking image An image taken during custody processing when available. A photograph is not evidence of guilt. Use it only with stronger identity information.
Same-name protection

Confirm the person before relying on the record

Full first and last name are consistent
Middle name, suffix or alias is consistent
Date of birth or age is consistent
Booking date matches the known incident
Arresting agency matches the location
Booking or case number matches another official record
Use at least two independent identifiers. Never send money, publish an accusation, contact an employer or make a housing decision from a name or photograph alone.
Same name but different birth date Treat the results as different people unless the responsible agency confirms a clerical error.
Similar photograph but different number The official booking and case identifiers are more reliable than appearance.
Same person appears more than once Separate each booking by date, number, arresting agency and charge.
One record is in Harris County Do not combine it with a Houston County record merely because both contain the word Houston.
Troubleshooting

No Houston County inmate record found? Follow this order

The arrest occurred recently Intake, medical screening, identity verification and data entry may still be underway.
The name was entered differently Search the surname alone and try a maiden name, suffix, hyphen variation, alias or alternate spelling.
You have a booking or inmate number Change the search type and enter the number rather than the name.
The person was released quickly The current-inmate list may no longer show the person. Continue with the criminal court search and a records request.
The person was transferred Custody may have moved to another county, TDCJ, a state jail, federal custody or another agency.
The arrest occurred in Houston city Search Harris County or Houston Police records instead of Houston County.
The case is old Current custody may be gone even though the court file remains searchable by the clerks.
The record is restricted Juvenile, sealed, expunged and otherwise confidential records may not appear publicly.
Useful jail-information call script “I am trying to confirm whether [full legal name], date of birth [date], is or was in Houston County custody. The arrest may have occurred on [date] through [agency]. I have booking number [number], inmate number [number] or court case number [number]. Can you confirm whether intake is pending or whether the person was released or transferred?”
Arrest-to-court timeline

How one Houston County arrest becomes several records

Law-enforcement incident A Sheriff’s deputy, Crockett police officer, constable, DPS trooper or another agency creates the incident and arrest records.
Jail booking Houston County creates the custody record, booking number, inmate number, property inventory and charge entries received during intake.
Magistration A magistrate addresses warnings, probable cause, bail and certain release conditions. Houston County lists two Justice of the Peace offices that conduct magistration.
Prosecutor review The District Attorney handles felony prosecution, while the County Attorney handles matters within the county office’s jurisdiction.
Case filing Felony cases are maintained by the District Clerk. Class A/B misdemeanors and Class C appeals are filed through the County Clerk.
Court activity The docket may show settings, motions, bond changes, pleas, trial activity, judgments and sentencing.
Release or transfer A person may leave through bond, personal recognizance, dismissal, sentence completion or transfer to another authority.
Final disposition The case may end through dismissal, acquittal, guilty plea, conviction, deferred adjudication or another court disposition.
Possible record relief Depending on the case, the person may investigate expunction or an order of nondisclosure.

Ask for an existing record, not an explanation

A Public Information Act request should identify existing documents. The agency is not required to create a new report, answer legal questions or conduct research for the requester.

Incident report

The primary report describing the event and initial law-enforcement response.

Arrest or probable-cause report

The document describing the asserted factual and legal basis for the arrest when maintained and releasable.

Supplemental reports

Later reports prepared by investigators or responding officers, subject to applicable exceptions.

Booking information

The jail intake data connected with the arrest, inmate and booking numbers.

Photographs or recordings

Describe the precise event, date, location and device or recording type.

Property or evidence receipt

Request the relevant property inventory or releasable evidence record by case number.

Information that helps the Sheriff locate the file

Full legal name of the arrested person
Date of birth when known
Incident or arrest date
Approximate time and location
Arresting deputy or agency when known
Agency report number
Booking and inmate numbers
Court case number
Copy-ready Sheriff records request
Under the Texas Public Information Act, I request an electronic copy of the releasable incident report, arrest report, probable-cause document and releasable supplemental reports concerning [full legal name], date of birth [date if known], for the incident or arrest occurring on or about [date] at [location]. Known identifiers are: Sheriff case number [number], booking number [number], inmate number [number] and court case number [number]. Please provide a written cost estimate before processing if the total will exceed $[amount].
Use a narrow request. One person, one incident, a short date range and named documents generally reduce search time, redaction work and cost.
Some material may be withheld or redacted. Active-investigation information, juvenile information, protected victim details, medical information and other legally exempt data may not be released.

Bond and release

How to verify bond before paying

The inmate list may show a bond amount, but the safest decision requires reviewing every charge, warrant, hold and court order connected with the booking.

Cash bond

The full amount may be deposited as permitted by the court and local processing rules.

Surety bond

A licensed bail-bond company may post the bond under Texas law and local requirements.

Personal or recognizance bond

A judge may authorize release based on a written promise and stated conditions when legally permitted.

No-bond matter

Release may require a new court order or resolution of another charge or warrant.

Outside hold

Another county, state, federal, probation or parole authority may prevent release.

Release processing

Posting an approved bond does not mean the person has physically exited the jail.

Confirm the exact person Use the booked name, date of birth, booking number and inmate number.
List every charge Record each charge, case number, bond amount and hold separately.
Ask whether all matters are releasable A payable bond on one case does not override a no-bond case or another agency’s warrant.
Confirm the accepted payment process Call the Sheriff at 936-544-2862 before bringing money, a check or another instrument.
Verify the payee and location Never rely on payment instructions supplied by an unsolicited caller or social-media message.
Keep every receipt Save the booking number, case number, payment amount, date, time and receiving office.
Wait for release confirmation Identification clearance, paperwork, property return and holds can delay departure.
Bail scam warning: Do not pay a supposed deputy, clerk or attorney through gift cards, cryptocurrency, wire transfer or a personal payment account. End the call and independently telephone the Sheriff or court.
Inmate correspondence

How to address Houston County inmate mail

Houston County publishes a separate inmate-mail and correspondence procedure. The jail’s current policy controls, so verify any item beyond a basic letter before mailing it.

Basic inmate-mail format
Inmate’s Full Booked Name and Inmate Number
Houston County Jail
700A South 4th Street
Crockett, TX 75835

Addressing checklist

Use the inmate’s name exactly as shown in the roster
Include the correct inmate number
Include the sender’s full name
Include a complete return address
Use plain paper and blue or black ink
Keep a copy of important correspondence

Avoid common rejection causes

Decorations and substances

Avoid glitter, confetti, perfume, lipstick, glue, stickers, crayons, markers and anything applied to the paper or envelope.

Money and valuables

Do not place cash, personal checks, gift cards or valuables inside ordinary correspondence.

Contraband or prohibited content

Do not send material involving weapons, escape plans, threats, illegal activity, explicit content or facility-security risks.

Cards and photographs

Call before sending greeting cards, photographs or copied images because current format and quantity rules may change.

Books and publications

Confirm whether the publication must be new and shipped directly by a publisher or approved retailer.

Packages

Do not send a package unless jail staff have approved the item and delivery method in advance.

Legal mail is different. Attorneys and courts should follow the facility’s privileged-mail procedure rather than relying on the ordinary family-mail checklist.
Visits, calls and commissary

What families should verify before creating an inmate-service account

Why this section uses a verification checklist: Houston County’s official Sheriff page does not publish a current visitation timetable, vendor price table or commissary fee schedule. Provider and schedule information can change, so calling the jail is safer than relying on an old directory.
Confirm current custody Search the live inmate list immediately before scheduling or paying.
Copy the exact inmate number One incorrect digit can direct a deposit or account to the wrong person.
Ask whether visits are on-site, remote or both Request the current days, times, appointment deadline, identification rule and visitor limit.
Ask for the approved provider name Verify the website or telephone number directly with jail staff before entering card information.
Separate account types Phone, video, messaging and commissary balances may use different accounts and cannot always be transferred.
Review the complete fee Check deposit, transaction, live-agent, refund and chargeback rules before submitting.
Save the transaction details Keep the confirmation number, amount, account type, date and inmate information.
Recheck after a release or transfer Stop funding county accounts when the person has left Houston County custody.
Do not use commissary money for bond. An inmate trust or store deposit is not a court bond payment and will not cause release.
Family-services call script “I am calling about [full booked name], inmate number [number]. Please confirm the current visitation method and schedule, approved phone or video provider, commissary-deposit provider, current fees, identification requirements and whether the person is pending release or transfer.”

Texas criminal history

When the Houston County search is not broad enough

The jail list and county court portals answer local questions. A Texas DPS name search is broader, but it has important limits and is not equivalent to a fingerprint-based nationwide check.

Search credit

$1 for each public name search.

Card surcharge

2.25% per credit plus $0.25 per order.

Account

A DPS public website account is required.

Result type

Name and demographic matching.

Main limit

Depends on records reported to DPS.

How the DPS online search expands a name query

  • Full last, first and middle-name combination.
  • Last and first name without the middle name.
  • Name match combined with the birth month and day.
  • A full date of birth to narrow possible matches.
Name-based records can be wrong. Similar names, aliases, incorrect dates of birth and incomplete reporting can create false matches or missed records. A fingerprint-based check is more identity-specific when legally authorized or required.
Public-record scope: Texas DPS explains that deferred-adjudication and conviction information may be available to the general public under Texas law. The county jail list may contain arrests that never resulted in a conviction, so the two systems answer different questions.
Expunction and nondisclosure

Clearing versus sealing a Houston County record

Expunction

An expunction is the stronger remedy and can remove qualifying arrest-record entries. Eligibility is limited and commonly depends on dismissal, acquittal, pardon, mistaken identity, waiting periods or another statutory ground.

Order of nondisclosure

A nondisclosure order restricts qualifying records from ordinary public disclosure. Law enforcement, courts, licensing agencies and other authorized entities may retain access.

Deferred adjudication is not automatically erased. Some deferred cases may qualify for nondisclosure, but an adult deferred adjudication normally does not qualify for expunction except in limited circumstances such as an eligible Class C matter.

Preparation checklist

Complete booked name and aliases
Date and place of arrest
Arresting agency and report number
Booking and inmate numbers
Every court case number
Certified disposition for every charge
Names and addresses of agencies holding the record
Prior criminal-history and record-clearing information
Identify every connected record Locate the Sheriff or police report, jail booking, prosecutor file and court case.
Obtain certified dispositions The outcome of each charge is essential to the eligibility analysis.
Compare expunction and nondisclosure Determine which remedy, if any, applies under the relevant Texas statute.
Prepare the correct petition List all agencies that may possess the record and use the proper court and statutory ground.
File through the District Clerk Confirm the current filing fee, agency charges, service requirements and hearing procedure.
Attend the hearing when required Filing the petition does not guarantee relief.
Obtain the signed order The record is not cleared or sealed until the court grants the requested relief.
Verify agency compliance Allow processing time, then check the county portals and Texas criminal-history record again.
Published Houston County filing figures: The District Clerk schedule links a $350 expunction suit, $18 for each listed agency and a $350 nondisclosure petition. It also states that there is no expunction charge on acquittals. Confirm how the exception applies before filing.
Current Texas resources: Texas Law Help provides updated expunction and nondisclosure preparation guides, while the Texas Judicial Branch publishes model nondisclosure forms organized by the applicable Government Code section.
This is procedural information, not legal advice. Eligibility can turn on the exact offense, disposition, waiting period and prior history. A Texas criminal-defense or record-clearing attorney can review the specific case.
