How to search the Travis County inmate roster correctly
Open the Sheriff’s inmate-search system
The search is intended for people presently in Travis County Sheriff’s Office custody. It is not a complete historical criminal background check.
Begin with the legal last name
Leave unnecessary fields blank during the first attempt. One incorrect detail can exclude a legitimate match.
Add the first name gradually
Add another identifier only when the last-name search produces too many possible records.
Test name variations
Try a maiden name, former surname, compound surname, hyphen variation, suffix or shortened first name.

No Travis County inmate record found? Follow this order
The arrest was recent
Intake screening, medical review, fingerprinting, magistration and data entry may still be underway.
The name is entered differently
Search the surname alone and try aliases, maiden names, suffixes and alternate spellings.
The person was released
The current inmate search may no longer display the record. Check the court portal or request an incarceration record.
A city police agency made the arrest
The person may still be in city custody or the detailed report may remain with that city agency.
The person was transferred
Custody may have moved to another county, Texas Department of Criminal Justice or a federal agency.
No court cause appears
Filing may not be complete, the prosecutor may still be reviewing the arrest or the cause may use another identifier.
The arrest was outside Travis County
Search the jurisdiction where the arrest occurred rather than where the person lives.
The record is restricted
Juvenile, expunged, sealed, confidential and legally protected records may not appear.

What happens after a person is arrested in Travis County?
Arrested individuals are brought to the Central Booking Facility at 500 West 10th Street in Austin unless an injury first requires hospital evaluation.
Hospital evaluation when injured
The arresting agency takes an injured person to a hospital and remains until the person is medically released.
Central Booking intake screening
The person completes a questionnaire covering medical, mental and physical health history.
Medical evaluation when needed
The Sheriff’s medical team identifies health needs and establishes housing, diet or other restrictions.
Holding and identification
The person receives a free phone call, is photographed and fingerprinted.
Magistration
A judge reads the formal charges and advises whether bail is applicable.
Property and booking number
Personal property is inventoried, the person receives a booking number and an inmate uniform is issued.
Housing and transport
The person may make a collect call based on availability and behaviour, then await transport to the Correctional Complex.
Release paperwork
Upon release, the person receives paperwork containing the court date or obtains that information through counsel.
Medication rule: Do not bring medication to either jail unless the Sheriff’s medical team contacts the family and specifically requests it.

The Sheriff provides incarceration records covering May 1988 to the present. This is different from a complete criminal-history or clearance letter.

How to collect property or money from an inmate
Personal valuables are placed in a sealed bag. Clothing is stored separately for release or transfer.
Ask the inmate to sign a property-release form
Property or money cannot be released until the inmate authorises the recipient.

Name-search limitation: DPS states that name, date-of-birth and other alphanumeric searches are not always accurate. Fingerprints are the only way to positively link a person to a criminal record.

Expunction
A qualifying order directs named agencies to destroy or return covered records as required by Texas law. Travis County District Clerk handles all misdemeanor and felony expunction filings.
Nondisclosure
A qualifying order limits public disclosure of covered information but does not physically erase every government record. District Clerk handles felony nondisclosures.

How do I search for someone in Travis County Jail?
Use the Sheriff’s official current inmate search. Start with the last name and confirm the date of birth, jail ID, seven-digit booking number, booking date and cause numbers.
Why can I not find a recent arrest?
The person may still be completing medical screening, fingerprinting, magistration or booking. The person may also remain in city custody, have been released or transferred, or be listed under another name format.
Does the public incident report include the officer narrative?
No. The basic public report contains the offence type, date and time, responding officer and reported stolen or damaged property. Submit an open-records request for the releasable narrative.
How much is a Travis County incarceration record?
The Sheriff publishes a $15 fee. Records are available from May 1988 to the present, and valid identification is required.
How do I find the final disposition of an arrest?
Contact the District Clerk for a felony disposition or the County Clerk for a misdemeanor disposition. The Sheriff does not issue the final court result.
What are Travis County Jail visitation hours?
Onsite face-to-face and kiosk visits are offered Wednesday through Sunday between 8 a.m. and 9 p.m., excluding county holidays. Appointment times and check-in cutoffs apply.
How do I mail an inmate?
Send the letter directly to the facility where the inmate is housed and include the full name, date of birth, jail ID or booking number and your complete return address.
Can I send a money order over $100?
No. Travis County does not accept money orders over $100 for deposit into an inmate trust account.
How much is a personal bond fee?
The administrative fee is $40 or 3% of the bond amount and is due to Travis County Pretrial Services within seven days after release.

The District Clerk’s published base fee is $350. Service, notice and other fees may apply depending on the agencies named in the petition.
