York County SC Arrest Records Search | Jail & Court 2026

York County, South Carolina · Arrest, booking, bond and court-record guide

Find a York County Arrest, Identify the Agency and Follow the Case to Court

York County’s public jail search is useful for a recent arrest, but it is not a historical arrest archive. The county specifically states that its online jail system contains only current booking information.

This guide explains what the current booking result means, how to identify the arresting agency, where older records move after release, how bond hearings are scheduled, what Sheriff records cost, and how to follow the case through South Carolina courts and SLED.

An arrest or booking is not a conviction. The jail site reports custody and charge information associated with a booking. The prosecutor may later change or decline charges, and the court may dismiss a case or reach another outcome. Always verify identity and the court disposition.

Start here

Choose the record based on what you actually need

Is the person in jail now?

Search the official York County Detention Center roster. It displays current booking information and can identify the booking number, charges, bond and arresting agency.

Need the arrest or incident report?

Find the arresting agency beside the charge. Request the underlying law-enforcement report from that agency rather than assuming every York County arrest belongs to the Sheriff’s Office.

Need the final legal outcome?

Search South Carolina court records. The court case is the better source for formal charges, hearings, pleas, dismissals and disposition.

Best workflow: current booking → booking number → arresting agency → court case → report or certified record only when still needed.

Choose the problem you need to solve

The important rules are included below so you do not need to open government pages merely to understand the process.

Current booking search

How to search the York County jail roster correctly

Important limitation: The Sheriff’s current inmate-search page explicitly says, “Only current booking information is available on this site.” If a person was released, do not conclude that no arrest occurred.
Open the official York County inmate search Use it for someone who may presently have an active York County Detention Center booking.
Start with the surname Use the person’s legal last name first. When the result set is too broad, add the first name.
Try alternate legal-name formats Test a middle name, middle initial, maiden name, compound surname, suffix or other known legal name if the expected result does not appear.
Open each plausible record Compare age, race/sex, height/weight, city, booking date and photograph rather than selecting a person solely because the names match.
Copy the booking number York County booking numbers identify a particular Detention Center booking. Save the number before making calls or requesting other records.
Read every charge separately One booking may have several charge sequences, different arresting agencies and separate bond implications.
Identify the arresting agency beside the charge The Sheriff’s Office specifically added this field to help users determine which agency made the arrest.
Move to the court index Use the defendant’s information and any available case details to determine what happened after booking.
Search result decoder

What a York County booking result tells you

Fields visible in the current York County jail search
Field Meaning What it does not prove Next action
Booking number Identifier for the current jail-booking episode. It does not identify the final court disposition. Save it for jail and records questions.
Booking date When the person entered the detention booking system. It may differ from the exact arrest or offense time. Use it to distinguish multiple incidents.
Release date Shows whether the booking displays a release or the person remains in jail. Release does not mean the charge was dismissed. Check the court case.
Total bond The total bond value displayed for that booking. A displayed total may not explain every hold or release condition. Confirm with the detention/bond-hearing staff.
Charge description The alleged offense recorded for a charge sequence. The allegation is not a conviction and may later be changed. Compare it with the formal court case.
Arresting agency Identifies the agency associated with that charge. Different charges may involve different agencies. Use this agency for the underlying police report.
Age Identity clue for distinguishing people with similar names. Age alone is not a unique identifier. Combine it with booking date and other identifiers.
Booking photo An image displayed with the current booking when available. A booking photograph is not evidence of guilt. Treat it as only one identity clue.
Same-name warning: Do not publish an accusation, contact an employer, send money or make another high-impact decision using only a name or photograph. Confirm multiple independent identifiers.
Identity check

Use at least two independent identifiers

First and last name match
Age or known birth year is consistent
Booking date matches the known event
City or other displayed location is consistent
Physical description is reasonably consistent
Arresting agency matches the known jurisdiction
Booking number matches another official source
Court record identifies the same defendant
Historical arrest search

How to find an older York County arrest after it leaves the jail roster

Because the public jail page contains current booking information only, released bookings require a different workflow.

Search the South Carolina court index Look for York County criminal cases under the person’s name. General Sessions, Magistrate and available Municipal Court records may help establish the filed case and disposition.
Identify the court level A serious criminal case may proceed through General Sessions, while other criminal and traffic matters may be handled in Magistrate or Municipal Court.
Identify the arresting agency If you already know the agency, request its incident or arrest report. York County Sheriff records are not the same as Rock Hill Police, Fort Mill Police, York Police or another agency’s records.
Use Sheriff FOIA for Sheriff’s Office records Submit a focused request with the name, date, location and incident or report number.
Use SLED CATCH when you need statewide South Carolina history A SLED CATCH report is broader than a single York County jail or court search, although it remains a name-based South Carolina search.
Do not use absence from the current jail page as proof of “no arrest record.” It may simply mean the person was released and the booking is no longer included in the current-custody search.
Troubleshooting

No York County inmate result found? Check these possibilities

The arrest is extremely recent Booking and database processing may not yet be complete.
The person has already been released The public inmate page is not a historical booking database. Switch to court and agency-record searches.
The name is different Try a maiden name, former surname, suffix or another legal spelling.
The arrest occurred in another county York County residence does not mean the arrest occurred in York County.
The person is in state custody After sentencing or transfer, search the South Carolina Department of Corrections rather than the county jail.
The person is held under another authority York County also houses certain U.S. Marshal and immigration detainees, and custody may later transfer.
The charge is in a municipal court Some municipal records are available in the statewide Public Index, but availability varies by court.
The record was expunged An eligible expungement may remove the charge from publicly accessible systems.
Call script for a missing booking
“I am trying to confirm whether [full legal name] has a current York County Detention Center booking. The arrest may have occurred on [date] through [agency]. I have searched the current inmate page but cannot locate the record. Can you confirm whether the person is currently booked, released or transferred?”

Mail, calls and messaging

Where York County inmate mail actually goes

Ordinary letters do not go directly to the Moss Justice Center address. Regular postal mail is sent to a processing center, scanned and made available to the inmate through a housing-unit kiosk.

Regular mail is scanned. Postcards, letters, greeting cards and other ordinary inmate postal mail are scanned into the system so inmates can view them through facility kiosks.

Money orders use the jail address, not the Florida scan center

U.S. Postal or Western Union money orders must be mailed directly to:

Do not put a letter in the money-order envelope. York County states that a letter or other information included in that envelope will not be forwarded to the inmate.

Inmate telephone calls

Calls can begin after booking

Inmates receive a PIN during booking and may begin calling to notify loved ones or arrange release.

The inmate must authorize release The inmate completes a Property Release Form identifying the person allowed to collect the property.
Go on an authorized property-release day Property pickup is published for Tuesdays and Thursdays.
Use one of the two daily windows Published pickup times are 8:30–11:30 a.m. and 1:30–4:30 p.m.
Bring valid identification The authorized recipient must present valid ID before property is released.
Statewide background check

When York County records are not enough: SLED CATCH

SLED CATCH—Citizens Access to Criminal Histories—is South Carolina’s public name-based criminal-history service. It is broader than a York County jail search because it searches South Carolina criminal-history information submitted to the state repository.

$25

Standard non-refundable criminal-history check.

$1

Published online convenience fee.

$1.43

Service fee for each $25 online CATCH report effective July 1, 2026.

$8 reduced

Qualifying charitable and certain statutorily eligible organization searches.

What SLED CATCH does and does not search

SLED CATCH limitations that affect interpretation
Feature What SLED says Why it matters
Geographic coverage South Carolina criminal records only. It is not a nationwide background check.
Search type Name-based search. Names can create false positive or false negative results.
Fingerprint basis CATCH arrest information is supported by fingerprint submissions from law enforcement or detention facilities. Underlying records are more identity-specific than a simple web-name match.
Wanted persons Wanted-person information is not included. Do not use CATCH as a warrant search.
Sex offender registry Sex-offender status is not included in the CATCH report. That information uses a separate state registry.
Aliases Different names or dates of birth can affect results. Fingerprint-based screening may be required where identity accuracy is critical.

Mail-in SLED request

A mail request avoids the online convenience fee. SLED accepts business checks, certified checks, cashier’s checks or money orders; personal checks and cash are not accepted.

Record relief

How York County arrest-record expungement works in South Carolina

There is no universal “delete my arrest” process. Eligibility and procedure depend on whether the case was in General Sessions, Magistrate or Municipal Court and how the charge ended.

General Sessions cases

General Sessions expungement applications begin with the Solicitor’s Office in the judicial circuit where the offense occurred. York County is in the Sixteenth Judicial Circuit.

Apply to the Sixteenth Circuit Solicitor The Solicitor’s Office first reviews the request and the statutory basis for relief.
SLED verifies eligibility The Solicitor sends the application to SLED when verification is required.
Required signatures are collected If eligible, the Solicitor obtains the necessary signatures, which can include diversion, summary-court and circuit-court officials depending on the case.
A circuit judge signs the order Eligibility review alone does not erase the record.
The order is filed with the Clerk The Solicitor files the completed order with the Clerk of Court.
Government agencies receive the order Copies are sent to pertinent agencies so their records can be handled as required by the expungement order.

Statewide published General Sessions fees

Fees when applicable
Fee Amount Payable to
Administrative fee $250 Solicitor
SLED verification $25 SLED
Court filing fee $35 County Clerk of Court
Some General Sessions dismissals can be fee-exempt. State law exempts qualifying applications under Section 17-1-40 from the Solicitor administrative fee unless the dismissed or nolle-prossed charge was part of a plea arrangement involving guilty pleas and sentencing on other charges.

Magistrate and Municipal Court dismissal / not-guilty cases

South Carolina uses a different process for certain summary-court cases. When a person is found not guilty or the charge is dismissed or nolle prossed, Section 17-22-950 can require expungement without a fee, subject to statutory exceptions.

If fingerprinted

The summary court generally initiates the statutory no-cost expungement after an eligible disposition, subject to the objection procedure and exceptions.

If not fingerprinted

The defendant generally applies to the summary court using Form SCCA 223E for an eligible no-cost expungement.

30-day public-index rule: South Carolina Judicial Branch guidance states that qualifying summary-court criminal charges must be removed from internet-based public records no later than 30 days from the disposition date even when the accused was not fingerprinted, subject to the statute and applicable exceptions.

What happens at SLED after an expungement?

SLED states that it does not start the expungement process and cannot remove a charge without the appropriate Order for Destruction of Arrest Records. For qualifying General Sessions matters, start with the Solicitor. For an eligible dismissed Magistrate or Municipal matter, contact that summary court.

SLED processing check: SLED advises allowing approximately four weeks after it receives the expungement order. SLED does not routinely send confirmation. After that period, a person can purchase a new CATCH report to confirm the current state repository result.

Source methodology

What was extracted from official sources for this guide

This article incorporates the York County Sheriff’s current-booking limitations, arresting-agency field, Detention Center structure, phone menu, bond-hearing schedule, visit approval rules, mail addresses, call system, commissary methods, property-release schedule, Records Management locations and FOIA charges.

It also incorporates York County criminal-court contacts, the South Carolina Judicial Branch public-index rules and expungement procedures, and SLED CATCH fees, limitations and post-expungement guidance.

Why there are fewer outbound links: the rules and numbers needed to understand the process are already on this page. Government or authorized-service portals are linked mainly where a live search, request, payment, message, visit connection or legal filing must actually be completed.
