Los Angeles County Inmate and Criminal Case Lookup: Verify the Arrest and Final Outcome

A Los Angeles County arrest can produce a city or Sheriff report, station-jail record, LASD booking, custody entry, bail decision and Superior Court criminal case. Those records are maintained by different offices and may not appear at the same time.

This guide explains the complete process in one place: how to find the person, interpret the booking, identify the correct agency, request reports, check court filings, arrange visits, send mail or money, monitor release and correct or clean a California record.

Do not treat an arrest as a conviction. A booking charge is an allegation recorded during arrest or intake. Charges may be changed, rejected or dismissed, and a defendant may be acquitted. Confirm identity with multiple official identifiers and check the court disposition.
Booking delay

New records may not appear for two hours.

Choose the record that answers your actual question

LASD CUSTODY Is the person in county jail?

Use the LASD Inmate Information Center to find the booking number, custody location, arrest date, charges, court information and release details presently available.

Best for: current custody, booking number, jail facility, bail entry and release tracking.
ARRESTING AGENCY What allegedly happened?

Obtain the crime, incident or arrest report from the agency that created it. In Los Angeles County, that may be LASD, LAPD or one of many independent municipal police departments.

Best for: incident narrative, officer observations, report number and releasable evidence.
SUPERIOR COURT What happened to the charge?

Search the Los Angeles Superior Court criminal index and case summary for filed counts, hearings, orders, pleas, dismissal, judgment and sentencing.

Best for: filed prosecution, court dates, case status and certified disposition.
Best full-record sequence: Find the booking, copy the booking and court case numbers, confirm the arresting agency, search the criminal docket and request only the specific report or certified document still needed.

Official lookup workflow

How to search the LASD inmate system correctly

Wait at least two hours after a new county booking. LASD states that inmate records are not available for bookings occurring within the most recent two hours.
Determine whether the person has reached county custody A person arrested by LAPD, another city department or an LASD station may remain in a local holding facility before transfer to the main county jail system.
Open the LASD Inmate Information Center Use the live Sheriff search for people processed into LASD custody.
Enter the complete legal last name Begin broadly. Avoid adding several optional details during the first search because one incorrect field can hide the proper record.
Add the first name and birth date LASD recommends having the person’s name and date of birth ready. Use the date of birth to separate people with similar names.
Try alternate name formats Test a middle name, omitted middle name, maiden name, former surname, hyphenated spelling, suffix or known alias.
Open every plausible match Compare the complete name, birth date, booking date, booking number, arresting agency and listed court information.
Save the booking number exactly The booking number is needed for mail, deposits, visitation registration, property questions, release verification and many jail-service transactions.
Record each case and charge separately One custody event may involve multiple cases, warrants or holds. A bail entry on one case may not permit release while another matter remains.
Confirm the jail facility Do not assume a downtown booking means the person will remain at Men’s Central Jail or Twin Towers. Housing may change after classification.
Search the court record next Use the criminal case number to review the filed charges and later outcome through the Los Angeles Superior Court.
Useful inmate-information call script “I am trying to locate [full legal name], date of birth [date]. The person may have been arrested on [date and time] by [agency]. I have [booking, report or case number]. Can you confirm whether the person is in LASD custody, at a station jail, released or transferred?”

What the LASD booking fields mean

Booking information, limitations and next actions
Field What it identifies What it does not prove Practical next step
Booking number The unique identifier for the LASD custody event. It does not explain the final court outcome. Use it for calls, mail, deposits, visits, property and release questions.
Booking date and time When the person entered the LASD booking process. It may differ from the arrest or alleged offence time. Use it to distinguish current and prior custody events.
Arresting agency The department responsible for the arrest. It does not mean LASD holds the incident report. Request the crime report from the listed agency.
Charge The alleged offence entered at arrest or booking. It is not a conviction and may differ from the filed count. Check the Superior Court docket and charging document.
Bail amount or release code The present release information attached to a particular matter. One payable amount may not clear another hold or no-bail case. Confirm every case before paying or signing a bond.
Court name or location The courthouse presently connected with the criminal matter. A case cannot be assumed active from the courthouse name alone. Use the case number in the court summary and calendar.
Housing facility The current LASD facility assignment. The assignment is not permanent. Reconfirm it before scheduling or travelling for a visit.
Release date When the custody event ended or is recorded as ending. Release does not mean dismissal or acquittal. Search the criminal court case for the prosecution status.
Pending release Release processing may be underway. The person has physically exited the facility. Call the release unit before arranging pickup.
Booking photograph A photograph associated with custody processing. It does not prove identity by itself or establish guilt. Compare the birth date, booking number and court case.
Fast-changing information: Housing, bail, court, release and transfer details can change after classification, arraignment, judicial review or another agency’s action.
Same-name protection

Verify that the Los Angeles County record belongs to the right person

Complete first and last name are consistent
Middle name, suffix or alias is consistent
Date of birth is consistent
Booking date matches the known arrest
Arresting agency matches the event location
Booking or court case number matches another official record
Use at least two independent identifiers. Do not send money, publish allegations, contact an employer or make a housing decision based only on a name or photograph.
Same name, different birth date Treat the records as belonging to different people unless an official custodian confirms an error.
Similar photograph, different booking number The official identifiers are more reliable than appearance.
Same birth date, different middle name Check aliases, prior names and the related court case number.
Address is unfamiliar Addresses may be old, incomplete or confidential and should not be the only identity test.
Troubleshooting

No Los Angeles County inmate record found?

Less than two hours have passed LASD states that records from the newest bookings are unavailable during the first two hours.
The person is still at a city jail LAPD and independent city police departments may hold an arrestee before county transfer or release the person directly.
The person is at an LASD station jail Call the station desk because a temporary station-jail detainee may not yet appear as housed in a major custody facility.
The name is recorded differently Search with or without the middle name and test aliases, former surnames and suffixes.
The person has already been released Search the booking or release information and then review the court case.
The person was transferred Custody may have moved to another county, CDCR, federal detention or another agency.
The case exists but custody does not The defendant may be out of custody, released pre-arraignment or connected with an older criminal case.
The record is restricted Juvenile, sealed, confidential or legally protected information may not be publicly available.
Search order: Wait two hours, retry with fewer fields, call the arresting city or station, call LASD inmate information and then search the Superior Court criminal index.
Custody process

What happens after an arrest in Los Angeles County?

Arresting-agency holding The person may initially remain at an LAPD, municipal police or LASD station jail while identification, reports and release decisions are completed.
Transfer to LASD intake Men are generally processed through the Inmate Reception Center. Women transferred into county custody are generally processed through Century Regional Detention Facility.
Identity, property and money Staff create the booking record, identify the person, inventory property and process money into the inmate trust system.
Medical and mental-health screening LASD states that people arriving at IRC or CRDF are screened for mental illness and other health concerns.
Classification and facility assignment Medical, mental-health, safety, security and operational considerations can affect the assigned facility.
Pre-arraignment release or continued detention The person may be released under the applicable protocol, remain for arraignment, post bail when legally available or remain because of another hold.
Prosecutor filing decision The prosecuting agency decides what charges, if any, to file in Superior Court.
Court case and disposition The case may proceed through arraignment, motions, plea, dismissal, trial, judgment and sentencing.

Victim versus general-public access: California law restricts access to many police and criminal-history records. Being curious about an arrest does not automatically create a right to receive the full crime report.
Agency routing

LASD does not maintain every Los Angeles County arrest report

Los Angeles County includes LASD patrol areas, the City of Los Angeles and many independent municipal police departments. The agency that arrested the person normally maintains its own crime report.

Superior Court records

How to search a Los Angeles County criminal case

Use the court case number when available A case-number search is more precise than a defendant-name search and reduces same-name confusion.
Use the Criminal Defendant Index when the number is unknown Enter the defendant’s name to locate matching criminal case numbers, filing dates and filing locations.
Check the search period The online criminal index generally covers felony cases from 1980 to the present and misdemeanour cases from 1988 to the present.
Know the older-record limitation Some misdemeanour data may extend to 1983 depending on when former Municipal Court locations automated their records. Contact Archives for older cases.
Open the criminal case summary Review the filing courthouse, defendant name, filed counts, event history and case status.
Check the calendar separately Use the criminal calendar or case calendar to confirm future hearing dates.
Find the filed charging document The prosecution’s formal count may differ from the charge shown in the jail booking.
Locate the final disposition Look for dismissal, nolle prosequi or prosecutorial dismissal language, plea, verdict, judgment and sentence.
Request the actual document when necessary Criminal document images are not generally available through the public online document-image service.

Common criminal case terms
Term Plain-language meaning What to verify
Pending The case has not reached a final outcome. Check the newest filing and next hearing.
Complaint or information filed The prosecution filed formal allegations with the court. Read every count and amendment.
Dismissed The court or prosecution ended a charge or case without a conviction on that count. Determine whether all counts were dismissed.
Not guilty The defendant was acquitted on the count decided by the verdict. Check whether other counts remained.
Guilty or no-contest plea The defendant entered a plea resolving one or more counts. Read the minute order and sentence.
Convicted A judgment of conviction was entered. Review the exact offence, disposition date and sentence.
Probation The court imposed supervision and conditions instead of or in addition to custody. Check the duration, terms and completion status.
Closed The system does not show the case as currently active. Closed does not explain how the case ended.
Court copies

Los Angeles Superior Court criminal copy and certification costs

$0.50 per page

Published charge for copies of court records.

$40 certification

Published certification charge for a copy of a paper, record or proceeding on file.

$15 extended index work

An indexing request requiring more than 10 minutes may incur a $15 charge.

How to request copies by mail

Identify the filing courthouse Use the criminal index to determine where the case is located.
Contact the courthouse before mailing Confirm that the file and requested documents are available and obtain a page estimate.
Complete the court’s Request for Copies form List the case number and exact documents needed.
Include payment Checks and money orders should be payable to Los Angeles Superior Court. Do not mail cash.
Use a not-to-exceed amount when instructed The court recommends placing a maximum authorised amount in the memo line rather than completing the payment amount before processing.
Include return postage Add a sufficiently stamped, self-addressed envelope.
Criminal document images: Unlike eligible civil, small-claims, family and probate records, public criminal document images are not generally available through the court’s online image-purchase service.
Bail and release

Do not rely on one bail figure in the booking result

Los Angeles County uses offence-based bail schedules together with pre-arraignment release rules and judicial decisions. The correct path depends on the offence, warrant, risk assessment, court order and every hold attached to the booking.

Confirm every criminal case on the booking
Identify any no-bail matter
Check outside-county or federal holds
Confirm whether release is pre-arraignment or court ordered
Verify the exact payment recipient
Keep every receipt and bond document
Release without money bail

Some qualifying people may be released under the applicable pre-arraignment protocol or on conditions.

Cash or surety bail

Other cases may require bail under the applicable schedule or a judge’s order.

Continued detention

A no-bail charge, warrant, court order or another jurisdiction’s hold may prevent release.

Bail scam warning: LASD personnel do not demand telephone payment through gift cards, cryptocurrency or Bitcoin. End the call and independently contact the court, jail or arresting agency.

Pending release does not mean the person is outside

Release processing can include court confirmation, hold checks, identity verification, property return, cashier processing and transportation. Confirm physical release before travelling for pickup.

California arrest sealing and conviction-dismissal paths

California does not use “expungement” to mean complete erasure in every case. Different statutes provide different forms of relief, and law-enforcement or government access may remain.

Arrest without a conviction

Penal Code section 851.91 may allow a person to request sealing when an arrest did not result in a conviction.

No charges were filed
Charges were filed and dismissed
Diversion was completed and charges dismissed
Deferred entry of judgment was completed and dismissed
The person went to trial and was found not guilty
The arrest otherwise qualifies under the statute
Obtain the criminal case and arrest information Gather the booking number, arresting agency, court case number and certified disposition.
Check whether automatic relief already occurred California DOJ may have automatically sealed an eligible arrest under Penal Code section 851.93.
Use Petition CR-409 when appropriate This statewide form requests sealing of arrest and related records for qualifying arrests without conviction.
File in the proper criminal court Follow the instructions in CR-409-INFO and serve the required agencies.
Obtain the court’s decision The court may use Order CR-410 when granting or denying the petition.

Dismissal of a conviction

A qualifying misdemeanour or felony conviction may be eligible for dismissal under California record-cleaning law. Eligibility can depend on probation or parole status, pending cases, sentence type and the offence.

Non-citizen warning: Record-cleaning relief can have complex immigration consequences and may not eliminate the immigration effect of a plea or conviction. Obtain advice from a lawyer experienced in both criminal and immigration law.

The Inmate Reception Center and Twin Towers Correctional Facility are at 450 Bauchet Street. Men’s Central Jail is next door at 441 Bauchet Street in downtown Los Angeles.

Practical decision guide

What should you do with the record you found?

1
Confirm current custody

Save the booking number and call LASD when the booking is new, the facility is unclear or release is pending.

2
Obtain the arrest narrative

Request the crime report from the arresting agency, not automatically from LASD.

3
Check the prosecution outcome

Search the Superior Court case and locate the formal filed count and disposition.

4
Arrange family services

Use the booking number for visitation, mail, deposits, property and medical-information routing.

5
Obtain formal proof

Request a certified court disposition or LASD incarceration letter rather than relying on a screenshot.

6
Correct or clean a record

Request the California DOJ RAP sheet, correct errors at the source and choose the appropriate statutory relief path.

Frequently asked questions

Los Angeles County arrest-record questions answered

How do I search for someone arrested in Los Angeles County?

Use the LASD Inmate Information Center for people processed into the county jail system. Enter the legal name and date of birth or use the booking number.

Why is a new arrest not appearing?

LASD says bookings from the most recent two hours are not available. The person may also remain at an LAPD, municipal or LASD station jail before county transfer.

What number provides Los Angeles County inmate information?

Call 213-473-6100. Prepare the name, date of birth, arrest time, arresting agency and any known booking or case number.

Where do I request an LASD arrest report?

Call the Records and Identification Bureau Public Services Section at 562-345-4441. Provide the name, birth date, incident date, location, identification details and report number.

Can I obtain another person’s California RAP sheet?

No. California summary criminal histories are confidential. A person may request their own DOJ record, while authorised agencies use separate legally approved processes.

How far back does the Los Angeles criminal court name search go?

The online index generally covers felonies from 1980 to the present and misdemeanours from 1988 to the present. Some automated misdemeanour records date to 1983.

Can I download Los Angeles criminal court documents online?

Public case summaries and calendars are available, but criminal document images are not generally offered through the public online document-image service. Request copies from the filing courthouse.

How much are Los Angeles Superior Court copies?

The published charges are $0.50 per page and $40 for certification of a copy of a paper, record or proceeding on file.

How early should I arrive for an LASD jail visit?

Arrive 60 minutes early for Men’s Central Jail, Pitchess Detention Center and North County Correctional Facility. Arrive at least 30 minutes early at other visiting locations.

How far ahead can an LASD visit be scheduled?

Appointments may be scheduled up to seven days in advance. Walk-in visits are not accepted.

What is the Los Angeles County inmate mailing address?

Use the inmate’s name and booking number followed by P.O. Box 86164, Terminal Annex, Los Angeles, CA 90086-0164. Women at CRDF may also receive mail at 11705 South Alameda Street in Lynwood.

Can I deposit inmate money online?

Yes. LASD resumed online deposits through Access Corrections in July 2025. Use a valid residential address rather than a post-office box and verify the booking number before paying.

How do I obtain proof that someone was released?

Contact LASD Records at 562-345-4441. With valid identification and the required fee, the Bureau can issue a letter showing the arrest name, booking number, charges, arrest date and release information.

How can I check whether I have a warrant?

LASD advises going to a local police department or Sheriff station so staff can conduct the appropriate check. Do not pay a caller who threatens arrest and demands gift cards or cryptocurrency.

How much does a California DOJ record review cost?

The DOJ processing fee is $25, although qualifying California residents may request a fee waiver. A Live Scan provider may charge a separate fingerprint rolling fee.

Can an arrest without conviction be sealed?

Many arrests that did not result in conviction may qualify under Penal Code section 851.91. Form CR-409 is the statewide petition, but eligibility and service requirements must be reviewed for the specific case.
