Omaha & Douglas County Criminal Record Guide 2026
Search Omaha Arrest Records, Police Reports and Criminal Court Cases
An Omaha arrest can create several records in different systems. Check Douglas County Corrections when the question is whether someone is in custody now, Nebraska JUSTICE when you need the court case and final disposition, Omaha Police when you need the underlying incident or agency record, and Nebraska State Patrol when you need a statewide Nebraska Record of Arrest and Prosecution.
The systems do not contain identical information. A jail booking does not prove guilt, a court case does not show every Nebraska arrest, an OPD report can be restricted while an investigation is active, and the public version of a State Patrol RAP sheet can omit certain arrests after statutory time periods.

Where Should You Search for an Omaha Arrest?
J
Someone was arrested recently
Start with Douglas County Department of Corrections to confirm whether the person is currently being held and obtain the local custody identifier.
C
You need charges and disposition
Use Nebraska JUSTICE to locate the Douglas County criminal case and read the offense information and register of actions.
R
You need statewide arrest history
Order a Nebraska State Patrol RAP sheet. It covers qualifying Nebraska fingerprint-based arrests and reported dispositions.
P
You need the police report
Request the applicable OPD record through the City of Omaha public-record process using a report number, date, location and parties when available.
No-result warning: “No record found” in one system does not prove that a person has never been arrested. The person may not have been fingerprinted, the event may have occurred outside Nebraska, a court case may not yet be online, or the record may no longer be publicly disseminated under Nebraska law.
Choose the Exact Omaha Record You Need
Confirm a fresh booking
Search the Douglas County inmate locator before paying a commercial arrest-record website.
Find a misdemeanor or felony case
Search JUSTICE, then distinguish Douglas County Court from Douglas District Court.
Run an official Nebraska criminal-history check
Order the $30 State Patrol RAP report using the legal name and date of birth.
Get an Omaha Police report
Submit a focused OPD public-record request with the incident/report number whenever possible.
Understand a dismissed case
Read Nebraska’s public criminal-history rules before assuming an old arrest should still appear publicly.
Clean up your own record
Determine whether adult sealing or a Nebraska set-aside may apply to the specific case.
Omaha Arrest Records Quick Navigation
Someone Was Just Arrested in Omaha: What to Check First
1
Arrest
Omaha Police, Douglas County Sheriff, Nebraska State Patrol or another agency takes the person into custody.
2
Booking
The person is processed and identifying information and alleged charges are recorded.
3
Corrections
Douglas County custody information may become available through the inmate locator.
4
Initial court
Misdemeanor matters generally remain in County Court; felony cases begin there for preliminary proceedings.
5
Case progression
Pleas, hearings, amendments, dismissal, trial or transfer to District Court can follow.
6
Disposition
The final result—not the original booking accusation—is the most important field when interpreting the record.
Practical order: Check custody first, save the booking/data number, then search the court after the case has been entered. Nebraska’s JUSTICE one-time search warns that new cases can have approximately a 24-hour lag before appearing online.
How to Check the Douglas County Inmate Locator
Omaha’s local jail is operated by the Douglas County Department of Corrections. The official inmate locator is the best first stop when the question is whether a recently arrested person is currently in county custody.
Search the last name first.
Use the legal surname and then add the first name to reduce results.
Use the data number when you have it.
A local corrections identifier is more reliable than a common name.
Match identifying details.
Compare age, sex, race, admission date and other displayed information before assuming the result belongs to the correct person.
Write down the admission information.
The booking/admission date can help narrow the later court search.
Move to the court record.
Custody data answers “where is the person?” The court docket answers “what happened with the charge?”

Facility operation
County corrections operates continuously; individual administrative services can use separate office hours.
Booking is not conviction: Jail information reflects custody and accusations at that point in time. Charges can later be declined, reduced, dismissed, amended or resolved differently.
How to Search Omaha Criminal Court Cases Through JUSTICE
Nebraska’s statewide trial-court database is called JUSTICE. It covers public county-court and district-court cases from all 93 Nebraska counties, including Douglas County.
Read the terms before paying.
The one-time search currently costs $17 even when the search returns no matching case.
Start with the party’s legal name.
Nebraska advises against over-narrowing the first search unless the name returns more than 30 cases.
Select Douglas County only when it helps narrow results.
A person arrested in Omaha can have criminal cases in other Nebraska counties, so statewide context may sometimes matter.
Open every plausible criminal case.
Compare court level, filing year, party name, case type and offense.
Read the register of actions.
This is the chronology of filings, hearings, orders and other case activity.
Review offense and disposition information.
Do not repeat the first charge line without checking how the case actually ended.
Use document images when the service provides them.
The broader subscriber service can provide electronic court images when available.
Save the case number.
Use it for court calls, record-copy requests and payment or hearing searches.
24-hour timing issue: The current JUSTICE One-Time Search says there can be roughly a 24-hour lag between entry of a new case and its appearance in the online search.

Felony-search tip: A felony arrest may first generate County Court activity and later continue under a District Court case. Search both levels before concluding the case disappeared.
Free local research option: Nebraska Judicial Branch says JUSTICE case information can be searched without an online case-search fee at courthouse public-access kiosks and participating law libraries, including Creighton University’s Klutznick Law Library.

$17
One-Time Name Search
Returns public case information on up to 30 matching records. Searches with no results are still charged.
3 days
Result access
The current one-time service keeps completed search results available for three calendar days.
$2
Subscriber case detail
Nebraska.gov’s 2026 subscriber pricing lists a $2 charge when a user selects case details.
$0
Courthouse kiosk search
Public-access terminals can be used for case-information research without the one-time online search fee; court copies can still cost money.
Do not pay twice by accident: If you already know the exact case number and only need a certified judgment or filing, contacting the correct Douglas County court can be more useful than buying another broad name search.
Six Fields to Verify Before Linking an Omaha Case to a Person
Legal name
Include middle names and suffixes.
Date of birth
Critical for RAP searches.
Case number
Best court identifier.
Case year
Match the arrest timeframe.
Offense
Compare initial and final charges.
Disposition
Read how the case ended.
Common-name caution: An Omaha court search can return several people with similar names. Never use a name match alone for employment, housing, tenant screening or another consequential decision.
Statewide official criminal-history route
How to Order a Nebraska Record of Arrest and Prosecution
The Nebraska State Patrol Criminal Identification Division maintains the state’s centralized fingerprint-based criminal-history repository. Its Record of Arrest and Prosecution—often called a RAP sheet—is broader than a single Omaha court case.
Choose online, mail or in-person.
Nebraska State Patrol allows all three request methods.
Enter the person’s first and last name and date of birth.
Additional identifiers such as previous names and Social Security number can help distinguish similar records.
For the online service, complete the additional identity fields.
The current portal asks for sex and race along with name and date of birth for the person of interest.
Pay the $30 non-refundable fee.
A request costs $30 whether a releasable record is located or not.
Retrieve the result promptly.
A clear “No Record” result can be available within minutes; records needing technician review can take up to three business days.
Save the receipt number.
State Patrol says it cannot provide the report later without a valid receipt number.
Download the report within its availability window.
Reports are available for 14 days after they are made available; after that, another paid request may be necessary.
$30
Online RAP request
Fee per person searched.
3
Business days
Maximum statutory processing period for a request received in good order.
14
Days to retrieve
Report availability period after release.
NE
Nebraska only
The RAP does not automatically show arrests from other states.
Why an Old Arrest May Disappear From the Public Nebraska RAP
Nebraska law limits what can remain in the public criminal-history view. This is one of the most important details for interpreting an Omaha arrest-record search.
1 year
Arrest with no charges filed
If the prosecutor decides not to file charges, the arrest information generally stops being part of the public criminal-history record after one year from the arrest date.
2 years
Completed diversion
When charges are not filed because diversion was completed, the arrest information generally stops being publicly disseminated after two years.
Now
Dismissed or acquitted
Nebraska State Patrol explains that qualifying charges dismissed by the court or resulting in acquittal are excluded from the public-information view under the statutory rules.
Full
Complete history
Some information excluded from the normal public view can appear on a Complete Criminal History when the subject authorizes release through the required notarized form.
This is why commercial “lifetime arrest” databases can mislead. Nebraska’s official public dissemination rules can intentionally exclude records that remain in criminal-justice systems but are no longer available in an ordinary public RAP report.
Public Information vs Complete Nebraska Criminal History
Public Information view
A member of the public may order an eligible Nebraska RAP on another adult by paying the fee and supplying the required identifying information. Statutory exclusions remove certain non-prosecution, diversion, dismissal and acquittal records from the public version.
Complete Criminal History
A more complete history can include information excluded from ordinary public release. The subject of the record must authorize the requesting person to receive it by signing the required release before a notary.
Fingerprint limitation: State Patrol says its repository reflects arrests where the person was fingerprinted. A citation, minor event or arrest without fingerprint submission may not appear.
Out-of-state limitation: A Nebraska name-based RAP is not a nationwide FBI background check. Fingerprint-based national checks are available only for legally authorized purposes.
How to Request an Omaha Police Department Record
OPD’s public-record policy directs requests through the City of Omaha public-record process. Police reports answer a different question than court or State Patrol records: they document the agency’s incident or investigation rather than the court’s final judgment.
Identify the exact record.
Decide whether you need an incident report, arrest-related report, body-camera record, dispatch material, photograph or another identifiable OPD record.
Gather the report number.
A report or RB number is the strongest identifier. If unavailable, collect the date, time, location and names involved.
Use the City of Omaha public-record process.
OPD policy says public-record requests should be submitted through the City’s public-record portal.
Describe the record rather than asking a broad question.
“Initial incident report for RB #____” is much easier to process than “send everything about John Smith.”
Expect legal review when the case is active.
Nebraska law permits agencies to withhold qualifying investigative or other protected information.
Compare the police record with the court disposition.
The police report explains the allegation and investigation; the court record shows what was actually charged and how the case ended.
Omaha Police Department
505 South 15th Street
Omaha, NE 68102
Public-record contact
OPD Public Information Office handles general Nebraska Public Records Act requests under department policy.
Investigative-record limitation: A police agency can possess a report without every page being publicly releasable. Initial material and later investigative supplements can be treated differently under Nebraska law.
Nebraska Public Records Requests: The Four-Business-Day Rule
Nebraska’s public-record statute does not guarantee that every requested law-enforcement page will be released within four days. It requires a timely agency response to the written request.
Records provided
If the requested public record can be produced promptly, the custodian may provide access or copies.
Written denial
If a legal exception applies, the agency can deny all or part of the request and provide the statutory basis.
Written delay
When a request is extensive or difficult, the agency can explain the delay, provide an expected completion date and estimate costs.
Better request = faster routing: Include the exact report number, date range, location, record type and names needed. Avoid requesting an entire department’s files when one incident report will answer the question.
How to Interpret an Omaha Arrest or Court Record
| Record Term |
What It Means |
What to Check Next |
| Arrest |
Law enforcement took the person into custody or otherwise processed an arrest. |
Court filing and final disposition. |
| Booking |
Corrections processed the person into custody. |
Admission date, charge and release status. |
| Pending |
The criminal case has not yet reached a final disposition. |
Register of actions and next hearing. |
| Dismissed |
The charge or case was dismissed. |
Whether all charges were dismissed and whether public-history restrictions apply. |
| Acquitted |
The defendant was found not guilty on the charge at issue. |
Record-sealing status and final court order. |
| Conviction |
A guilty plea, no-contest disposition where applicable, or finding of guilt produced a conviction. |
Sentence, probation, fines and later set-aside activity. |
| Set aside |
A Nebraska court granted relief that nullifies the prior conviction for specified purposes. |
Do not describe a set-aside as deletion of the entire historical record. |
| Sealed |
The record is removed from ordinary public access under applicable Nebraska law. |
Access remains possible for specified people and criminal-justice agencies. |
Use the final outcome: Search results often display the arrest allegation or original charge prominently. Always inspect later amendments and the disposition before describing what happened.
Juvenile Arrest Records Are Not Ordinary Public RAP Records
Nebraska State Patrol states that juvenile arrests are not included in the public adult criminal-history request. Douglas County also has a separate Juvenile Court system.
Do not expect a public State Patrol RAP result
Juvenile arrests are excluded from the adult public criminal-history product.
Juvenile adjudication is not an adult conviction
Nebraska’s JUSTICE service specifically notes that adjudication under the Nebraska Juvenile Code is not a criminal conviction.
Privacy caution: Do not try to bypass juvenile-record access protections by using commercial people-search sites.
When Can an Adult Nebraska Criminal Record Be Sealed?
Nebraska Judicial Branch distinguishes record sealing from a set-aside. A sealed record is removed from public access, while a set-aside generally does not erase the historical conviction.
Dismissed or acquitted cases
Cases dismissed or ending in acquittal after December 31, 2016 are generally sealed automatically under the current Judicial Branch guidance.
Older non-conviction cases
A dismissal or acquittal before January 1, 2017 may require a motion to seal.
Other qualifying categories
Current Nebraska guidance also describes sealing routes involving certain pardoned convictions and qualifying sex-trafficking-survivor cases.
What sealing changes: Nebraska Judicial Branch says a sealed record is not available to the ordinary public and a person may generally respond to public inquiries as though the sealed case did not exist, subject to the law’s exceptions.
Review official Nebraska adult record-sealing guidance.
Nebraska Set-Aside: Different From Erasing the Record
A set-aside is a court order that nullifies a criminal conviction for specified legal purposes. The Nebraska Judicial Branch expressly says it does not erase the conviction history.
Potential qualifying sentences
Current Judicial Branch guidance includes qualifying cases involving successful probation, completed community service, paid fines or imprisonment of one year or less, subject to additional eligibility restrictions.
Separate petition for each conviction
If several convictions exist, a separate petition is required for each conviction the person wants the court to set aside.
Get the case number and disposition.
Use JUSTICE, the courthouse terminal or your own Nebraska criminal history.
Review eligibility.
Confirm the sentence and whether any disqualifying circumstances apply.
Complete Petition CC 6:11.
Use the current Judicial Branch form.
File in the court that handled the conviction.
An Omaha misdemeanor may be in Douglas County Court; a qualifying felony case may be in Douglas District Court.
Follow local hearing procedure.
County- and district-court scheduling procedures differ.
Set-aside ≠ sealed: Do not tell an employer or another person that a conviction “was deleted” merely because a court granted a set-aside. Use the exact legal status shown in the order.
Open Nebraska Judicial Branch set-aside instructions.
Practical Omaha Arrest-Record Scenarios
Family member arrested tonight
Check Douglas County Corrections first. Court information may not yet be visible because booking and case entry take time.
Employer asks for Nebraska criminal history
Use the Nebraska State Patrol RAP process rather than sending screenshots from a third-party people-search site.
Old arrest but no public RAP result
Review whether the arrest was fingerprinted and whether Nebraska’s statutory public-disclosure periods removed it from the public view.
Misdemeanor in Omaha
Start with Douglas County Court and read the criminal/traffic case disposition.
Felony arrest
Search County Court for early proceedings and District Court for the later felony case when applicable.
Need the officer narrative
Court records may not answer that question. Request the relevant OPD report using the police report number.
Dismissed charge still appears on a website
Verify the official Nebraska public record and court sealing status before assuming a privately operated website reflects current legal status.
Arrest happened in Iowa
A Nebraska State Patrol RAP will not automatically include it merely because the person lives in Omaha.
Need a complete nationwide background check
A Nebraska name-based RAP is not an FBI nationwide fingerprint background check. Nationwide access depends on a legally authorized purpose.

Omaha Arrest Records FAQs
1. How do I find out if someone was arrested in Omaha?
For a recent arrest, start with the Douglas County Department of Corrections inmate locator. If the arrest resulted in a criminal court case, search Nebraska JUSTICE and verify the final disposition.
2. Can I search Omaha arrest records online for free?
Current Douglas County custody information can be searched through the county inmate locator without purchasing a commercial background report. Nebraska court case information can also be researched at courthouse public-access terminals without the $17 one-time online name-search fee.
3. How much does a Nebraska criminal-history check cost in 2026?
The Nebraska State Patrol currently charges $30 per person for a name-based Record of Arrest and Prosecution request. The fee is non-refundable even if no releasable criminal record is found.
4. What does a Nebraska RAP sheet include?
The RAP sheet contains qualifying Nebraska fingerprint-based arrests and reported dispositions. It does not automatically include arrests from other states, juvenile arrests, minor citations or every arrest where fingerprints were not submitted.
5. How much does the Nebraska JUSTICE court search cost?
The current one-time party-name court search costs $17 and can return up to 30 matching cases. Nebraska states that searches with no results are still charged.
6. Why can an old Omaha arrest disappear from a public background check?
Nebraska law limits public dissemination of certain criminal-history information. For example, an arrest where prosecutors file no charges generally stops appearing in the public history after one year, and qualifying diversion records generally stop appearing after two years.
7. Where do I request an Omaha Police report?
Omaha Police policy directs general public-record requests through the City of Omaha public-record process. Provide the report number, date, location and specific type of police record whenever possible.
8. Which Omaha court handles criminal cases?
Douglas County Court handles misdemeanor criminal cases, traffic matters and preliminary hearings in felony cases. Felony cases within district-court jurisdiction proceed in Douglas District Court. Both are located at the Hall of Justice at 1701 Farnam Street.
9. Can a Nebraska conviction be removed from the record?
Nebraska offers several forms of relief depending on the case. Adult record sealing can remove qualifying matters from public access, while a set-aside nullifies an eligible conviction for specified purposes but does not erase the historical record.
10. Are Omaha juvenile arrest records public?
Juvenile arrests are not included in the Nebraska State Patrol adult public RAP product. Juvenile court and law-enforcement information is subject to separate confidentiality and sealing rules.
