San Diego County, California · Custody, arrest report and criminal court guide

San Diego Booking, Inmate and Criminal Court Record Guide

A San Diego County arrest can produce several records that answer different questions. The Sheriff’s custody page can show a current booking, the arresting agency controls its incident or arrest report, and the Superior Court maintains the filed criminal case.

This guide brings the county’s search rules, jail services, report fees, warrant process, court-copy requirements, record-correction options and local office details into one page. The official portals are used only when a live search, reservation, payment, submission or document order must be completed.

An arrest is not a conviction. A booking charge is an allegation recorded during arrest or intake. The prosecutor may change or decline charges, and the case may be dismissed or end without a conviction. Never identify a person from a matching name or booking photograph alone.

SHERIFF CUSTODY Is the person in jail now?

Use Who’s In Jail for current Sheriff custody, booking identifiers, pending charges, bail information, housing, scheduled court events and custody-status details.

Best for: recent arrest confirmation, booking number, custody location, bail and next court date.
ARRESTING AGENCY What allegedly happened?

Request the arrest report, incident report, probable-cause narrative or releasable supplements from the Sheriff, police department or agency that created the report.

Best for: incident narrative, officer observations, report number and releasable investigative material.
SUPERIOR COURT What happened to the charges?

Use the Court Index to locate the case number and courthouse. Review or order the official criminal file to determine the filed charges and disposition.

Best for: prosecution status, hearings, amended charges, dismissal, plea, judgment and sentencing.
Best full-record workflow: Locate the booking, save the booking and case numbers, identify the arresting agency, search the Court Index and then obtain only the report or court document still needed.

Official jail lookup

How to search San Diego County Who’s In Jail correctly

Open the Sheriff’s live search The Who’s In Jail system is the county’s live lookup for people held in the San Diego County Sheriff’s detention system.
Enter at least two letters The search accepts a minimum of two letters for the last name and two letters for the first name. A partial-name search helps when the full spelling is uncertain.
Start broadly Enter the first two or three letters of the first and last name rather than assuming the exact full spelling, suffix, hyphen or compound surname used at booking.
Complete the five-letter security code Enter the displayed CAPTCHA characters. The letters are not case-sensitive. Refresh the code if the page rejects a correctly entered search.
Click the person’s last name The last name opens the detailed record even when it does not visually appear to be a link.
Compare the personal identifiers Check the date of birth, age, sex, race or ethnicity, physical description, booking date and arresting agency before treating the result as a match.
Save the booking and case numbers Record the booking number and every court case number. These identifiers are more reliable than a name when arranging visits, requesting records or checking court activity.
Read every charge and bail line One booking may contain several cases, charges, warrants or holds. A bail amount attached to one matter may not resolve another.
Confirm changing information The Sheriff warns that projected release information may change because of sentence-credit or release-date recalculations. Confirm important release information with the facility.
Weekly maintenance: The Who’s In Jail system is normally taken down each Wednesday around noon for maintenance and is generally restored within approximately 30 minutes.

What each San Diego jail-record field means

San Diego County booking fields and practical next actions
Field What it identifies What it does not prove Best next action
Booking number A specific Sheriff custody intake. It does not establish guilt or the final court outcome. Use it for calls, visits, mail, deposits, VINE and jail questions.
Date and time booked When the person entered the Sheriff’s booking process. It may differ from the incident or physical arrest time. Use it to distinguish multiple arrests involving similar names.
Arresting agency The Sheriff, city police or other agency responsible for the arrest. It does not mean that agency maintains the court record. Send the incident-report request to this agency.
Housing facility The jail where the person is currently assigned. The assignment is not permanent and may change. Confirm the current facility before visiting or mailing legal material.
Charge The allegation entered for the booking or associated case. It may differ from what the prosecutor later files. Review the official court complaint and later amendments.
Charge class The displayed level, such as felony, misdemeanor or infraction. It does not explain enhancements, reductions or later amendments. Confirm the exact filed count in the criminal case.
Bail amount or status The bail information currently attached to a charge or case. Posting that amount guarantees release. Check all cases, holds and release restrictions before paying.
Court case number The number used by the San Diego Superior Court. The jail display may not show every later docket event. Use it in the Court Index and DA case-information search.
Next court date A scheduled appearance reported to the custody system. The event cannot be rescheduled or moved. Recheck the court file shortly before the appearance.
Projected release An estimated or calculated release date where displayed. The person will physically leave on that date. Confirm credits, holds, transfers and release processing with custody staff.
Release-date warning: The Sheriff states that release dates can be inaccurate because calculations may be revised. Do not arrange travel, housing or transportation without confirming actual release status.
Same-name protection

Verify the person before using an arrest record

Full first and last name are consistent
Middle name, suffix or known alias is consistent
Date of birth or age is consistent
Booking date matches the known event
Arresting agency matches the location
Booking or court case number matches another official source
Use at least two independent identifiers. Never send money, contact an employer, publish an accusation or identify a person publicly based only on a matching name, age or photograph.
Same name, different birth date Treat the records as different people unless the maintaining agency confirms an error.
Similar photo, different booking number A visual resemblance is not a reliable legal identifier.
Same birth date, different middle name Check aliases, full case numbers and the arresting agency before deciding.
Search result lacks demographic details Contact custody staff or obtain the official record before relying on the match.

A city, state or federal agency holds the person The person may be in a municipal holding facility, California state custody, federal custody or another county.

Bail and release

San Diego County bail, holds and release checks

The Superior Court’s 2026 bail schedule took effect January 1, 2026, but bail is offense-specific and can be affected by judicial orders, warrant status, enhancements and other legal restrictions. Do not estimate bail from the charge name alone.

Cash bail

Cash bail may be accepted for a qualifying case. Obtain a receipt showing the payor, case and amount.

Surety bond

A California-licensed bail-bond agency may deliver a bond in person to the custody-information office at a detention facility.

No-bail or hold

Release may require court action or resolution of another warrant, case, agency hold or jurisdictional matter.

Record every case number A single booking can contain multiple cases. Verify the bail status attached to each one.
Ask about outside holds Another county, state, federal or immigration-related matter may prevent release even when local bail is posted.
Confirm the accepted method and location Obtain instructions from custody or the court before carrying cash or purchasing a payment instrument.
Verify the bail-bond licence The Sheriff publishes an annual list of licensed agencies for reference but does not recommend or endorse a particular company.
Save the receipt The cash-bail refund is issued to the payor and address shown on the receipt after the court exonerates the bail.
Wait for physical release confirmation Bail posting does not guarantee immediate release. Property return, paperwork, classification and unresolved holds can create delays.
Cash-bail refunds: After the case is resolved and the bail is exonerated, court accounting states that a refund is generally mailed approximately four to six weeks after confirmation. Court accounting can be reached at 619-450-7034, Monday through Friday, 8:30–11:30 a.m.
Phone-payment scam: Sheriff employees do not demand money by phone to cancel an arrest or warrant. Do not pay through gift cards, cryptocurrency, wire transfer or a personal cash-transfer account.
